Chile Pepper Fun Fact - Astronauts on the International Space Station
NASA grew and harvested chili peppers in space, a scientific breakthrough. It's confirmed... Chile Peppers are out of this world! See what we did there?
Astronauts on the International Space Station grew chili peppers for the first time, which a NASA astronaut used for tacos to feed the crew.
The seeds were brought to the ISS in June, part of NASA experiment to see what foods can be grown in space. The experiment was to help establish possible food sources for long missions, potentially to Mars.
NASA astronaut Megan McArthur tweeted on Friday that the crew tasted the peppers, and that she used them in tacos along with fajita beef and vegetables. She called them her "best space tacos yet."
NASA said in July that the peppers would grow for about four months as part of its Plant Habitat-04 investigation. It said the process was "the first time NASA astronauts will cultivate a crop of chili peppers on the station from seeds to maturity."
NASA said that the crew would eat the peppers if they seemed good, and also save some to bring back to Earth for study.
Hot Sauce Fun Fact - Mtn. Dew Hot Habanero Collectable Hot Sauce
Did you know that Mountain Dew soda and NBA star Joel Embiid collaborated on a Hot Sauce with Mountain Dew in it? Well now you do...
More often than not, my food—be it nachos, tacos, quesadillas, whatever—is just a vessel for hot sauce. I'll douse just about anything in an entire bottle of the stuff. A sentiment that, apparently, I share with NBA super stud Joel Embiid. The 76ers star center is teaming up with Mountain Dew for the brand's first-ever hot sauce.
Embiid—a self-proclaimed spicy food aficionado who's said to have sampled hot sauce measuring 2,000,000+ on the Scoville scale—and Houston-based hot sauce purveyor iBurn have created an all-new recipe with fan-selected habanero peppers. The bottle, which includes actual soda, isn't available for purchase. You'll have to hit up social media to score on of the 500 available.
"I’m always looking for that extra kick of spice when I put hot sauce on my food, and no one knows how to bring the heat better than my friends at MTN DEW," Embiid is quoted as saying in a statement. "We sampled so many different flavors, spices and peppers while making the sauce. It was crazy! And the best part was that we got to bring DEW fans along for the ride. I think people will agree that there is no other hot sauce like this."
The company first teased the spicy—with a hint of sweet—concoction back in September, asking fans to vote on the pepper they wanted front and center in the recipe. Habanero claimed the title, beating out peri-peri, fatalii, and datil. And while Mountain Dew has not revealed where it falls on that same Scoville scale, considering Joel's tolerance, you should plan to keep a glass of milk in arm's reach should score a sample.
Hot Sauce Fun Fact - They are so Popular
The #1 Most Popular Hot Sauce in America, According to New Data.
A recent study based on Instacart sales revealed a new favorite hot sauce in the country.
Here's a fact that Instacart uncovered after an analysis of their hot sauce sales from last year: Most like it spicy. According to a survey conducted on the platform, 74% of Americans eat hot sauce with their food. Also, people are not switching to a different brand all that often, as 67% of respondents said they were passionate about their favorite hot sauce brand. Still, despite strong brand loyalty, most (83%) are willing to try a new brand.
Using purchase data on the platform between December 2020 and November 2021, Instacart determined the ten most popular hot sauces and narrowed it down to which states are buying them most. In a surprising upset, the third most popular hot sauce from last year's poll grabbed the #1 spot in the U.S. and became the hot sauce of choice in 31 states.
The new #1 hot sauce in America, according to Instacart sales, is Huy Fong Sriracha. Sriracha is different from just about every other hot sauce on this list because it contains sugar and is garlic forward.
According to Taste of Home, the sugar content is equivalent to ketchup. The sugar mellows out the heat and the garlic gives it great flavor. Sriracha is the top hot sauce in 31 states, completely dominating the west. So, if it seems like the iconic red rooster is everywhere these days, it's because it is.
